Moving is one of the most traumatic events in our lives. It is our belief that the better planned and organized the move is, the less trauma will be involved. Please use the following suggestions to your benefit:

Contact 2 or 3 movers to do written estimates for you. The only way to do an accurate estimate is for a mover's representative to visit your home and do an inventory of your goods to be moved. Try to have these estimates done well in advance of the move; we suggest at least 2 months prior to the move date. Make a decision and schedule the mover.

If you are doing your own packing, start early. Most people do not allocate enough time for packing and create last minute stress. If the mover is packing for you, be sure to arrange a packing date when you schedule the move. Do not pack any flammables, caustics, or corrosives. Think in terms of: "If it leaks, will my goods be damaged?" Drain all fuel from lawn equipment, snowmobiles, snow blowers, golf carts, etc. It is a good idea to do this as early as possible and then remove the fill cap so the remaining fuel evaporates. DO THIS OUTDOORS. Make arrangements to discontinue utility services.

The services will be off when you get up on the day you request. We suggest that you discontinue telephone service the day following your moving day unless you have a cell phone. A phone is necessary on moving day. Make arrangements to forward mail to your new address.

Discontinue services such as newspaper, cable, and spring water. Arrange for final meter readings for water, electric, and gas.If you are moving long distance, don't forget to pick up the last dry cleaning.

Be sure to thoroughly clean refrigerators and freezers after emptying. If you are moving long distance or are storing your goods, place a box of baking soda in a refrigerator drawer and in the bottom of the freezer. This will help eliminate odor.

We hope you find the above hints helpful! Any hint that you think might be helpful can be added to the list, so please e-mail ideas to the address below!
